Random 10!

I've been occupying myself with other projects for the last while, and I apologize to you, blog, for being neglectful. To ween myself back onto posting, I'm starting easy...hello, Random 10!

1. Backwater, Meat Puppets
2. Jack-A-Roe, Bob Dylan
3. Jazzy Bells, Outkast
4. Bu$hleaguer, Pearl Jam

It's amazing to think that four years ago, Pearl Jam caused a hand-wringing storm by performing this song about this "aristocrat choir" that sings "What's the ruckus?" This is a nonsense song now, and I don't think PJ even performs it that much anymore (verdict: not really), but this was a big deal then. Eddie staked a Bush mask on the mic stand???? LAWSY MERCY!

Here's the song from the Live @ the Garden DVD...

5. A Joyful Process, Funkadelic
6. Section 2 (It's the Sun), The Polyphonic Spree
7. South Bound Suarez, Led Zeppelin
8. Pride and Joy, Marvin Gaye
9. All Right, Cecilia
10. Sweet Black Angel, Rolling Stones

Lollapalooza 2007 (Day -1)

One day from departure, and the listening schedule is starting to take shape. Here are the Top Ten Most Anticipated Bands (by Me) for this weekend:

Honorable Mention:

* LCD Soundsystem (Friday, 7:30). Because they made Rolling Stone’s “Top 20 Live Acts” list a while back, and I know little about them (other than the “disco-punk” label). I might have to split time between them and Femi Kuti & The Positive Force, though.

* Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Saturday, 6:30). Because, like LCD Soundsystem, they made the list, and I kinda want to see why.

* Muse (Saturday, 8:30). Same as with LCD and Yeah Yeah Yeahs...though I might have to split between that and Interpol.

* G. Love & the Special Sauce (Friday, 5:30). Because he’s G. Love.

10. Tapes ‘n Tapes (Saturday, 1:30). Because I’m currently enjoying their 2006 release, The Loon (though I might split between them and Kevin Michael...I’m always a sucker for a guy with a ‘fro).

9. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists (Friday, 1:30). Because I was very impressed with their last album, Living with the Living, and they pack lots of variety into their songs.

8. The Polyphonic Spree (Friday, 2:30). Because they’re the only band in the Lolla lineup that could qualify both as a choir and a cult.

7. TV on the Radio (Sunday, 7:15). Because I want to see just how they manage to pull off their sound live.

6. Amy Winehouse (Sunday, 2:15). Because I want to see if she shows up.

5. The Hold Steady (Saturday, 5:30). Because there’s really no one else like them.

4. Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals (Friday, 8:30). Because I haven’t seen them perform in four years.

3. My Morning Jacket (Sunday, 6:15). Because they’re about two steps from becoming my favorite band.

2. The Roots (Saturday, 4:30). Because they’re simply one of the best live bands in the world.

1. Pearl Jam (Sunday, 8:00). Because they’re Pearl Jam, and somehow seeing them now is a bigger deal than seeing them 15 years ago.

And for fun, a Lolla-themed Random 10...

10. “Buckle”, Tapes ‘n Tapes
9. “Colleen”, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
8. “It’s the Sun” (live), The Polyphonic Spree
7. “Bomb Yourself”, TV on the Radio
6. “Some Unholy War”, Amy Winehouse
5. “Banging Camp”, The Hold Steady
4. “Whipping Boy”, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals
3. “Xmas Curtain” (live), My Morning Jacket
2. “Break You Off (Dub/Sound Check)”, The Roots
1. “Thumbing My Way” (live), Pearl Jam

Random 10!

Hello, Random 10. It's been too long. Sorry, baby.

1. Love Sick, Bob Dylan
2. Lullaby + Exile, M. Ward
3. Goodbye Earl (live), Dixie Chicks
4. Sleep Now in the Fire, Rage Against the Machine
5. All of Me, Willie Nelson
6. Running Joke, Queens of the Stone Age
7. Peaches & Cream, Beck
8. Caravan, Van Morrison

I start running into trouble when I start thinking of lists like "Ten Favorite Albums". I'll create the list, then realize I forgot about 2-3 that should have been at the very top. I forget about Moondance from time to time, but then I stumble across "And It Stoned Me" or "Moondance" or the "Into the Mystic", the greatest ballad of all-time (today, anyway), and it makes me listen to the whole album twice. Nobody captures a specific vibe like Van Morrison. Even today, as he continues to put out an album every couple years or so...his work might not be quite as amazing, but he finds a vibe, nabs it, sticks it in a jar, and preserves every wonderful ounce of it. It says something about him that Tupelo Honey, one of the happiest, most content albums ever, isn't his best album.

9. Gimme Some Truth (live), Pearl Jam
10. Tears of Rage, The Band

Random 10!

I’m slightly fine-tuning the “Talk about Song #1” process that I ripped off of Erik at Alter Destiny. So I don’t have to b.s. about a song I don’t want to b.s. about, I will talk about a song of my choice. It’s my blog, I can do what I want to!

1. Chonkyfire, Outkast
2. Stuck Between Station, The Hold Steady
3. Box #10, Jim Croce

If ever I do a Primer on Jim Croce (and trust me, the thought has crossed my mind), this song will probably make the list. As I said in a previous post:

On a side note, Jim Croce’s catalog works ... with almost every song fitting into one of three categories—bad relationships, bad guys, badass women.
Well this is one song that doesn’t fit into one of those categories. Call it the exception that proves the rule. It’s Jim Croce at his simplistic best, telling a detailed, sad story in three verses and a simple chorus. Guy from Southern Illinois goes to the big city to make it as a musician, gets robbed, goes broke, ends up sleeping in a hotel doorway.

While there are lots of reasons for me to disagree with my musical upbringing (let’s just say that berlin niebuhr is a much bigger fan of Herman’s Hermits than the Beatles or Dylan), I was weaned on Jim Croce’s entire catalog, and I consider that a pretty good thing. While I enjoy the ballad-heavy rotation of Croce’s well known catalog (“Time in a Bottle”, “Photographs and Memories”, etc.), most of my favorites are rarities. “Box #10”, “Hey Tomorrow”, “Workin’ at the Car Wash Blues”, “Rapid Roy the Stockcar Boy”...just fantastic music. He did more with less than most musicians, especially in the period in which he thrived.

4. Rise Above, Black Flag
5. Colors and the Kids, Cat Power
6. Mathematics, Mos Def
7. Raunchy ’73, Incredible Bongo Band
8. Requiem, M. Ward
9. Tonight is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel, Barenaked Ladies
10. Always on My Mind, Willie Nelson

Now THAT’s the variety I look for in a Random 10!

Random 10!

Time to shamelessly rip off an idea from Erik Loomis of Alter Destiny. Let's add a little extra to the Random 10 by saying a little something about the first song on the list. Works for me!

1. Bluebird Wine, Emmylou Harris

About three years ago, a bunch of remastered Emmylou cd's were released, and I picked up Pieces of the Sky and Elite Hotel, both from 1975. Covers abound on these albums, but the most timeless piece to me was an original, "Bluebird Wine." Depending on the mix, this song could be used as a template for about 9 different genres. As it is, it's a precise telling of where country was in the mid-'70s. Bump up the guitar, and you've got pretty solid alt-country. Make the rhythm guitar electric, and you've got a pretty solid rock song. Okay, that's three genres, not nine. Still a fantastic song. Plus...bonus points for the key change at the end, where they decide to jam out the song a little while longer. Emmylou's had one of the strangest careers in history. She's more revered now than when she had hit albums. She's hotter now (with white hair) than when she had hit albums. She's been the go-to backup vocalist for everybody from Bob Dylan to Dave Matthews to Conor Oberst. Until I bought these two remasters, I couldn't have named a single song of hers, but I'd held her in super-high regard for over a decade. Like most past country stars, she's known by one name. Like I said...interesting career.

2. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1 (live), Flaming Lips
3. Identity (live), Pat McGee Band
4. The Way That He Sings (live), My Morning Jacket
5. Lillian, Egypt, Josh Ritter
6. Shoe Box, Barenaked Ladies
7. #36 (live), Dave Matthews Band
8. Ghost of You, Hannah Wolff Band
9. If It Wasn't for You, Handsome Boy Modeling School
10. Stevie Nix (live), The Hold Steady

Wow...in all, this was the most homogenous Random 10 ever.

Random 10!!

I hit a turkey on the way to work today. I came over a hill, and it was flying up over a low shoulder. I saw it about 0.1 seconds (just long enough to flinch) before it made clean contact with the windshield. You cannot imagine the damage this does. It was like hitting a flying bowling ball. Windshield = obliterated. Glass everywhere. So here's a themed Random 10...

1. Jive Turkey, Ohio Players
2. Milkin' the Turkey, Grateful Dead
3. I'll Be Yr Bird, M. Ward
4. Hummingbird, Wilco
5. Bluebird Wine, Emmylou Harris
6. And Your Bird Can Sing, The Beatles
7. Mockingbird, Eminem
8. Bird Food, Ornette Coleman
9. Birds Without Wings, David Gray
10. Bird Sings Why The Caged I Know, Atmosphere

For the record, I've now run over two animals in my life (not counting random bunnies or robins)...neither of which are deer or armadillos or possums. A turkey and a dachsund. I always have to be different.

Inspired by the Random 10

I’ve got quite a large catalogue of digital music (not bragging or anything). The problem is that I’m not really listening to most of it. I’m stuck on my playlists and have a few albums that I religiously listen to, but that’s about it. I feel like I’m in a musical rut. So I’m trying a little experiment. I have an iPod Shuffle that’s just been laying around. So following The Boy's lead, I’m going to load it up using the random autofill feature in iTunes and cross my fingers. Maybe this'll help me branch out more, maybe just solidify my musical tastes. Who knows? I’ll keep you all informed as my plan unfolds. Here goes nothing.
