Half Hour News Hour Shelved
It's Shep's first post and only six months or so late! I am glad to see this show canceled. I've only seen this trash once or twice, but I can assure you that it was not anything close to "The Daily Show on Fox News Channel" as it was originally billed, the jokes were FAR more hate-filled (among other things), but of course we've come to expect that.
and in other Fox News, the Fox Internet Group will now be managing all of it's affiliates websites, that is scary....
maybe I'll write something about myself when I post again in six months...

Will a 20-Year Nap Be Enough?
So Bushnev follows President Cheney's orders and lets Scooter off. Law means nothing to these people. I’m sorry but when will Dems and the “reasonable” people waiting for the 2008 elections to change everything figure out that, between the threat of terrorist attacks as shown now in the UK and the likelihood of more (un)provoked war in the Middle East, these guys who have shown they will stop at nothing to get and keep their power, even blatant violation of the Constitution and the legal system, are highly unlikely to let those elections meekly happen and that there is now a fully armed Supreme Court that will uphold any of its actions (with “Justice” Kennedy supplying the fifth vote in his usual vacillating but oh-so-considered way)? Sure, maybe a disastrous economic downturn might undercut any power. ORRR, it might give their illegal power even more urgency and base from desperate people seeking certainty from authoritarian tough guys. It’s not even like watching a slo-mo car wreck anymore. It’s like watching a slo-mo pile-up . . . with all the cars still moving toward a cliff. With fire below. I’ve been watching this for over 30 years, it’s made me a very frustrated and cranky person, and even our best bloggers (and I definitely don’t mean the sites with the most traffic) don’t fully get how long or how bad it is, much less “leaders” and pundits. Can I find out where Rip Van Winkle fell asleep please?

Losing Real Conservatives
People who have ties to actual conservatism are calling out the revolutionaries (as Krugman nailed them in his The Great Unraveling) who bastardize traditional principles in the name of power. One hope we do have is that the Repubs have painted themselves into the Limbaugh/O’Reilly corner so far that only the completely brainless will support them. Which, I realize, still might constitute a majority in any election in this country.

And Thereby Fox News Is Explained
Several studies lately casting doubt on, well, the intelligence of conservative types. Here's another, with some more depth. Actually, while it affirms that "[p]olitical conservatism is associated with less openness to experience . . . , and highly positively correlated with fear of uncertainty," it's more about the average conservative's lack of creativity. The correlations between three measures of creativity and conservatism were between -.15 and -.21, not large but highly significant statistically in the study (meaning that the two variables were inversely related). What was especially interesting was that the gap between the two widened as aging was taken into account--the older conservatives were even less creative.
Now, for an organized system to balance on that creative edge of chaos, conservatives are needed to pull back on the levels of creativity that threaten to push the system over that edge. But the danger for that system comes when they have too much influence and pull the system toward inertia. The balance is the key, and we're clearing tipping too far the other way right now in a world of US economic precariousness, foreign adventures, and global warming (water, energy). Right now we need more creativity, not less, less conservatism, not more. This study helps to explain why, and, frankly, why conservatives produce such mindless crap (although the Gibsons, Limbaughs, and Stallones certainly haven't impoverished themselves selling to those folks). And it explains why Fox News and its copiers are so relentlessly one note and incapable of taking on Stewart, Colbert, and Mahers.

I’m off work today (Happy Harry Truman Day!), so it’s time to see what our impeccable (and growing) blogroll is coming up with...let’s get to it!
Being that it is Harry Truman’s birthday, I guess we should mention that not everybody agrees on, shall we say, the level of his greatness (Existentialist Cowboy).
For a second or two, I actually thought this was real (Skippy)...that’s a bit of an indictment of myself, but that’s an even bigger (I hope) indictment of how much I think of my president’s decision-making abilities.
Garance Franke-Ruta’s horrid “You can’t lift up your shirt till you’re 21!” proposal is getting justifiably slaughtered. Roy at Alicublog is happily up to the task of addressing this stupidity, as is Avedon, and Mannion (for that matter, so is non-blogroller Jon Swift). Echidne takes a more measured tone. So does Scott at LG&M. Me? I’m just glad that the country has started to realize that electing people who would create laws based on what makes them feel all icky inside might not be a good idea. Still a ways to go, of course, but...yeah. How about we enforce the laws we have (i.e. underage drinking) and see what that does first? Just a thought.
I knew I was going to link to somebody’s post about how the Kansas National Guard (and equipment needed to help repair the Kansas town that was 95% wiped off the map this weekend) is in Iraq and unable to help with the full force they normally would...I just couldn’t decide who would get the honors. ...Jonah Goldberg's theory that the voters simply don't know what they're doing? Missouri is run by a whole lot of pantloads.The ballot language referred to the cost-of-living increase.
Silly voters, you obviously don't understand what's going on, so we're going to go ahead and fix your mistakes for you.
It read: “Shall Missouri Statutes be amended to increase the state minimum wage rate to $6.50 per hour, or to the level of the federal minimum wage if that is higher, and thereafter adjust the state minimum wage annually based on changes in the Consumer Price Index?”
However, Cooper and other Republicans have concluded that voters didn’t understand what they were considering.
And while we're picking on my home state...I posted that a couple of weeks ago. In the last week or so, there's definitely been something of a whiff of panic coming from Missouri Republicans. Governor Blunt is sinking further as corruption becomes more of a conversation topic, and it's starting to look like some major losses could be on the docket next year (then again, I could be underestimating the people who voted for these folks), so they're cranking through absolutely everything on their ideological agenda. And they're geting more and more transparent by the moment...
First there's the MoHELA initiative...from the KC Star...Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt’s “Lewis & Clark Initiative” started out with a laudable goal but a nefarious means of getting there.
And from Fired Up! Missouri...
After a thorough mangling in the General Assembly, the plan has gone from half-bad to all bad.
To raise funds for a major expansion of the state’s life sciences industry, Blunt proposed plundering the assets of the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MoHELA), the nonprofit agency that helps families afford college.
Lawmakers are on the verge of grabbing those assets. Making things even worse, the life sciences building program has degraded into a hodge-podge of campus construction that excludes Kansas City and Columbia.
Legislative leaders already had purged medical research buildings from the list because of hysteria over stem-cell research.
So much for the state’s commitment to life sciences.
This week Senate Republicans, in an act of petty retribution, yanked $15 million that had been intended for an expanded pharmacy and nursing building at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. A $31 million new cancer center at the University of Missouri-Columbia was also scratched.
Republicans threw the temper tantrum because Democrats Jolie Justus of Kansas City and Chuck Graham of Columbia delayed a vote on the bill with a filibuster.[T]he MOHELA appropriation legislation reveals that fifteen million of the dollars generated by the sale would go into a small, loosely overseen non-profit corporation controlled by Blunt's GOP crony Rob Monsees --the same man who brought the MOHELA sale to the Governor to begin with while employed as a deputy chief of staff in his office.
And while we're at it, here's the desperate abortion legislation...
Those $15 million are being directed into sixteen "projects" controlled by the Missouri Technology Corporation --of which Rob Monsees serves as executive director--most or all of which are reportedly unknown to at least some members of the Missouri Technology Corporation's board of directors. Given that the legislation also provides for "100% flexibility" between projects for the appropriated funds, Monsees would have broad latitude to reapportion the funds into projects he favors.The House passed legislation yesterday that would subject abortion clinics to more stringent regulations, a move critics claim would make it harder for women to get abortions in Missouri.

We're Doomed

Says all we need to know about the chances of dealing with this wisely if we insist on consensus and listening to all sides.
You may have noticed that March of this year was particularly hot. As a matter of fact, I understand that it was the hottest March since the beginning of the last century. All of the trees were fully leafed out and legions of bugs and snakes were crawling around during a time in Arkansas when, on a normal year, we might see a snowflake or two.
This should come as no surprise to any reasonable person. As you know, Daylight Saving Time started almost a month early this year. You would think that members of Congress would have considered the warming effect that an extra hour of daylight would have on our climate. Or did they?
Perhaps this is another plot by a liberal Congress to make us believe that global warming is a real threat. Perhaps next time there should be serious studies performed before Congress passes laws with such far-reaching effects.

Vanity plus sloth...

We know better. We believe in God. We don't date crazy foreigners. We are manly-men. If we'd been there this wouldn't have happened. We'd have stopped him somehow. We'd have stood up to him. We'd have caught the bullets in our teeth, slapped the gun out of his hand, knocked him flat with a flick of our finger. We'd have made a gun of our own magically appear in our hand and our aim would have been true and we'd have shot the sucka dead before he could've fired off his first round.I don't have a single thing to add to this. He says everything I would have said, and he says it in an infinitely more creative and literate way (then again, putting things in a generally literate way assures that the point will totally be lost on the Orcs themselves). Just go read it.
We know we'd have done all this and survived and been heroes because we've told ourselves so a thousand times.
Orc Logic is seductive. It is vanity plus sloth. Self-love and moral and intellectual laziness combined. Once you let it become your habit of thought you are freed forever from self-examination, self-criticism, self-judgment. You are freed from having to worry about your own behavior because you know that you are a better person than they are, whoever they are, and that whatever you do is automatically the right thing because you are not them and whatever they do is wrong.
Orc Logic is extremely useful to people whose politics and moral code are devoted exclusively to defending their money and their privileges. If you know without having to think about it that you are a good person you don't have to listen to any calls to sacrifice and pleas for fair dealing and demands that you do an inconvenient right thing.

I haven't felt the need to post about...
...the whole "Liberals = crazy and hateful because a couple anonymous posters made hateful comments about the Cheney assassination attempt" thing because, well, it's silly. And beyond that, Greenwald has done a great overall job of stressing, point-by-point just how silly it is. However, there's just no questioning how sad and dangerous this whole issue is. And Greenwald's latest on the issue points out exactly why:
So Ann Coulter appeared as a featured speaker today at the Conservative Political Action Conference -- the preeminent conservative event of the year -- and called John Edwards a "faggot." Her speech was followed by an enthusiastic round of applause from the upstanding attendees.This is such a no-brainer issue. The difference is impossible to miss, unless you're intentionally miss it. Anonymous idiots on message boards...well, they ruin message boards. Just ask rational fans of any sports team. You can't post on a sports message board anymore because the idiots are 10x more vocal than the non-idiots. It's the same with politics. So some HuffPo commenter said he was disappointed Cheney wasn't killed. That's so far beyond "non-issue", you can't even see it. Never mind that the comment was removed quickly (and yet you can go see something worse on LGF any time of day)...if this were 1999, and somebody tried to assassinate Al Gore, Ann Coulter would not only have said something even worse than "Darn, I wish they'd gotten him"...her appearance fees for conservative events would have doubled after making such a comment. N.O.N.-.I.S.S.U.E. Until conservatives get held to even 1/1oth the standard that liberals do, this is not an even playing field.
Last year at the same event, she warned Arab "ragheads" about violence that would be done to them and called for Supreme Court justices to be murdered -- and received standing ovations. Everyone knows what a rancid hate-monger she is, yet (or rather: "therefore") she continues to be invited to the highest-level "conservative" events, be drooled on with admiration by presidential candidates like Mitt Romney, and have little right-wing warriors wait in line around the corner to get her signature on their copies of the books she wrote.
But that's all fine. There are much more important topics to discuss -- like the anonymous commenters at Huffington Post and the bad words said by the bloggers hired for low-level positions by the Edwards campaign. Those are matters of the gravest importance meriting the most solemn condemnation and righteous outrage from all decent people. Those HuffPost commenters have uttered terrible thoughts, and that shows the anger, venom and hatred on the left, among liberals. It is cause for great alarm -- and for headlines.
But the single most prestigious political event for conservatives of the year is a place where conservatives go to hear Democrats called faggots, Arabs called ragheads, and Supreme Court justices labeled as deserving of murder -- not by anonymous, unidentifiable blog commenters, but by one of their most popular featured speakers.
And after she does that, she is cheered wildly by an adoring conservative movement that has made her bigoted and hate-mongering screeds best-sellers, all while they and their deceitful little allies in the media, such as Howard Kurtz of The Washington Post, write idiot tracts about how terribly upset they are by the affront to decency from HuffPost commenters [in between writing obsequious, tongue-wagging profiles of Coulter's most radical ideological allies, such as Michelle Malkin, who penned a lovely defense of the internment of Japanese-Americans, for which even Ronald Reagan apologized (but, I believe, she never cursed while doing so, which is what matters most)].

The more Ann Coulter says these things, the more popular she becomes in this movement. What this is about is that she reflects exactly what sort of political movement this is. She reflects its true impulses and core beliefs. If that were not the case, why would she continue to receive top billing at their most prestigious events, and why would she continue to be lavished with rock star-adoration by the party faithful?
In other words, I agree with Greenwald.

Weather, Water, Energy 2-27-07
Oh, no. I may have to rethink my position on global warming. Bill O'Reilly says deniers are "idiots" and "ridiculous." Could I be wrong? If O'Really thinks . . . oh, wait, this makes everything okay again. Falwell says global warming is a "myth" designed to distract us from what Jesus condemned at every chance--abortion and gays. . . . Don’t these morons know that those of us who believe global warming is happening want to kill capitalism and our economy???? A good article on investing in the opportunities coming open and reviews of what's happening in areas like ag, alternative energy, automotive, financial services, infrastructure, real estate, and tech. And here's Wall Street's evolving perspective, with emphasis on carbon footprints, carbon accounting, and green investment. . . . James Hanson, the NASA scientist Bushnev couldn't shut up, says that a moratorium on coal-fired power plants is one of the most important things we can do to get greenhouse emissions under control since CO2 "capture" technology is probably 5-10 years away. But pay no attention. The "president" doesn't like him. . . . Drought in SW China, a million people potentially with little water (yes, million) and (and this is something we rarely talk about) the Yangtze basically unnavigable. But, by all means, China, insist that others have to take action on global warming, not you. . . . Now global warming is whacking the world's largest tiger reserve (it's in India, as if you didn't know that). Let's just pray they don't find out and get loose.

You're like a big bear, man...
My last year in grad school, my roommate and I probably watched Swingers at least 10-15 times. At least once every 3-4 weeks, coming home from a bar, we'd grab Taco Bell and stick in Swingers. Let's face it--it's one of the most perfect college-age-guy movie ever, and over a decade later, it's held up quite nicely. Everybody knows a guy like Mikey, the previously witty and together guy who's had his heart ripped out and can't seem to recover; and everybody knows a guy like Trent, the guy's guy who's not emotionally shallow so much as emotionally void. It helped even more that, over the course of a few months that school year, I was Mike...and my roommate that year was almost 100% Trent. I was struggling to get over a breakup, and after a while, my roommate threatened to come into my room when I wasn't around and take away my Beck Sea Change and Dylan Blood on the Tracks cd's...not to mention Norah Jones and Van Morrison and anything else that wasn't hip hop or Incubus. So yeah...we watched Swingers a lot.
One of the most positive, encouraging scenes in Swingers comes directly before The Most Painful Movie Scene of All-Time (if you've seen the movie, you know what scene I'm talking about...the answering machine scene...do NOT click on this link if you're prone to nausea). The boys are at a bar, and Mike was flirting harmlessly with a girl...feeling defeatist about the pursuit until Trent and another buddy, Sue, move in for some encouragement.
Strangely enough, I'm mentioning this to make a political point.
Democrats, you're the bear. You're like a big bear with claws and with fangs...and you're staring at these claws and your thinking to yourself, and with these claws you're thinking, "How am I supposed to kill this bunny, how am I supposed to kill this bunny?" And you're looking at your claws and you're looking at your fangs. And you're thinking to yourself, you don't know what to do, man. "I don't know how to kill the bunny." With this you don't know how to kill the bunny.
Right now, despite a major media structure that is every bit as passive and lazy and cliquish as it was two, four, or six years ago, the Democrats have the claws right now. They have public opinion on their side of the issues. A corrupt administration is being stripped naked as we speak--I'm not sure enough non-bloggers are actually paying attention, but over the next year or so, there will be a legitimate opportunity to impeach the vice president (I'm not going to allow myself to be naive enough to think that impeaching the president is actually possible).
The minority party in Congress is not, as I thought they might, playing the passive, whiny minority oppressed by the majority party...they're actually taking a stand on an issue with which a giant majority of the people in the country virulently disagree (yes, Harry, they indeed most certainly "miscalculated" on this one...now take advantage of it).
The President is unabashedly aiming to attack another sovereign nation, and while the entire idea of separation of powers has been turned into one giant gray area, I'm going to naively believe that he can still be stopped. And no matter what, the public is not on his side...and unlike four years ago, the public is correct this time.
The tape just loops over and over again with every issue--Republican leadership continues to prove itself inept and incorrect on every major issue facing this country. Democrats have common sense, reality, public opinion, and momentum on their side.
I spent some time in January tracking the Dems' "First 100 Hours" agenda and noting that, in the House at least, they were aggressive and successful. That's great. But it's over now. But now's the time to go from third to fourth gear, regarding not just Iraq/n, but everything. Dems have the claws. They've got the fangs. They CANNOT let the bunny go free this time. There is too much on the line here.
Democrats have to realize that they are NOT going to be the guy in the G-rated movie that everybody is rooting for. They are a politicans, part of a political party. They are not going to be loved and appreciated by most people in this country. They are not going to be seen as common folk--they just need to serve common folk well. They don't need to talk anymore about what they "need" to be doing. They just need to do it. They know what is best for this country, and they need to pursue it. Now. You're so money, and you don't even know it.
