All You Need to Know about Obama
If president, he would consult with Republicans like Tom Coburn. You know, the “lesbians hide in school bathrooms” Senator from Oklahoma. The guy who protested NBC showing “Schindler’s List” because it had full frontal nudity in the concentration camp scenes.
Here’s Coburn’s latest:
Citing a concern over the Second Amendment rights of veterans, U.S. Senator Tom Coburn has placed a hold on a bill that calls for the development of a program to address the group's high suicide rates.
Aaron Cooper, a spokesman for the Oklahoma Republican, says Coburn's primary concern with the bill is that information that veterans might provide during mental health screenings could be shared among agencies.
Cooper says that information could be used to infringe upon the rights of veterans to own guns.
Doesn’t matter what Obama would “consult” with Coburn about. The fact that, in order to prove he’s oh-so-bipartisan, he links himself to one of the biggest nut cases to ever sit in the US Senate (think about that for a second) is enough to reveal his capacity for rational judgment and touch with reality. Yet again, the man proves he’s just not ready for prime time.

Legacy Down
In 2004 Howard Dean was the closest to understanding what has happened to the American Legacy and what it would take to restore it in a political world of Repubs and Repub-lites. John Edwards, with his “Two Americas” theme, was closest behind him. Of course we know what was done to Dean by his own party, and John Kerry stupefied and emasculated any effort by Edwards to talk about underlying principles of our legacy and place in the world and for each other. In 2007, Edwards has turned up the dial and is hitting even more of the right notes . . . and dropping in the polls. Maybe it’s that drop that that’s convinced him just to go out with guns blazing and truth hammering. But I think his fate will demonstrate that the bulk of the American people just don’t care about what this country was supposed to stand for. Howard Dean’s problem wasn’t himself or the media. It was the American people. Edwards looks to be facing the same enemy. We’ve ceased to deserve what we’ve been given, and none of the well-planned bromides from the Clintons or Obama, even if victorious somehow in 2008, will reverse that. There’s always been a thread in our country that promised opportunity for every person here, but it’s been swept away in contribution corruption, media perversion, and politician mediocrity and mendacity. Edwards increasingly understands it, but in a democracy you get what you deserve. And that bill is only now arriving.

Too Much to Clean Up
One of the many problems with the Dems’ “don’t do everything needed now, just wait until we get the Presidency and then we’ll make things right again” strategy is that the magnitude of the distortion and destruction is so great that energies to clean up the very largest Constitutional messes will be used up quickly, leaving nothing for the multitudes of littler messes that will then go unaddressed, like this example of DOJ interjection into death penalty cases, setting yet another precedent of concentrated national control that the Dems won’t likely correct, leaving it sitting there for the next Repubs to rachet into even greater power and threat. (And that’s assuming the Dems DO get the Presidency.)

Wizards of Oz
Apparently the same person who told Tommy Thompson, the seriously incompetent former governor of WI who personifies the “Wizard of Oz” and has gotten lunatic praise for it from gullible reporters nationally (as someone who got to go into WI to try to clean up one of his many messes, I know), that he had a chance at the Presidency has convinced DC reporters that Karl Rove is really just going to go off into retirement to write his memoirs. He’ll be campaigning for the next President (actually probably is right now), probably Romney, from what I’ve read. That’s what’s truly scary and what people have never understood about our future. Presidents come and go, Karl Rove never will. (And this story will also suck oxygen from stories about Iran and the economy. How conveeeeenient.)

a) Hillary is not the most electable...sweet jesus, no. She's the one candidate that conservatives will show up to vote against even if they're completely and totally uninspired by their own set of candidates.
b) If Hillary wins, Paul Begala and James Carville are once again the spokesmen of the Democratic Party again. Seriously, this is what we are supposed to want?

Steve Soto is normally one of the shrewder bloggers, but he's come out for Hillary because she's most electable and offers as proof of his wisdom the fact that in 2004 he supported John Kerry for the same reason. And she, like Kerry, will be able to deal effectively with the Repub attacks in the coming campaign.

Only 474 days to go...
FindLaw points out one more reason (#1,187?) why a Dem winning in 2008 is three steps beyond critical: the next three Supreme Court Justices in order of retirement likelihood are the three most liberal on the bench. If a Giuliani or Thompson wins in ’08, the 5-4 decisions about which we rant could turn into 7-2 or 8-1 decisions. Awesome. Meanwhile, if a Dem wins, well...things don’t get better, but they don’t get worse. Good to know.
Since I haven’t written anything about ’08 in a while, let’s check in on candidates:
Republicans
Giuliani – the more you learn about him, the less you like him.
McCain – his staff are jumping like rats abandoning a sinking ship, but that’s okay because he’s just like Reagan.
Romney – the real Breck Girl.
Thompson – like Dubya, only more southern.
Ron Paul – he’s crazy, but he’s the only truly pro-military Republican candidate...and it’s showing.
Democrats
Hillary – not fading just yet...and re-establishing her ‘inevitability’ vibe.
Obama – not rising just yet. And with the 24-7 coverage, the fact that he’s still losing six months before the first primary is being treated like major stagnation. And he’s still got the money to make some noise.
Edwards – best asset = wife. Oh, and he’s not colluding with Hillary.
Richardson – spending most of his efforts in (predictably) Iowa and New Hampshire, and is being rewarded with 3rd place in NH.
Biden – not worth mentioning.
Dodd – hasn’t dropped out yet!
And now my current odds...

Thompson – 40%

James Dobson (saying, “Screw it, I’ll do this myself”) – 5.9%

Thank God for the Death Clock
I know some of the smarter, cooler blogs are dissing the idea that the Busheviks would monkey with the 2008 elections. (These tend to be the same people who diss impeachment on the grounds that it can’t work, even if just against Cheney, while they applaud withholding funds from Bushnev as if that would stop him or his court(s) wouldn’t back him in the resulting court cases. Please. Recent experience should have us way too far past this naïve silliness by now.) Meanwhile, we “conspiracy theorists” look at the coverage given the failed UK bomb attacks (“one of them talked about getting jobs over here!!!!”), consider the hype that would follow another Middle Eastern “devil” war, notice the Constitution MEANS NOTHING to the people in power (especially when the Supreme Court will endorse “unitary power”), and marvel that the new “kewl” kids have the megaphone. God, I’m glad my “death clock” says I don’t have more than a couple of more decades left.

Remember the good old days of 2003, when Howard Dean wasn’t electable, but John Kerry was? Well...why hasn’t anybody mentioned the ‘electability’ of Hillary Clinton?
From the "Tell Us Again Why This Isn't a Problem" Department, a new national Mason-Dixon Poll finds 52 percent of Americans saying they wouldn't even consider voting for Hillary Clinton for president.She’s the only one with a ‘net-unfavorable’ rating. Honestly, she’s the only one that Republicans have a chance against. But I guess she’s not a “crazy” and “angry” “outsider” like Howard Dean...she’s a nice establishment candidate all the way, so it doesn’t really warrant a mention.
"Hillary's carrying a lot of baggage," explains Mason-Dixon's Larry Harris. "She's the only one that has a majority who say they can't vote for her."

We've already got a Law & Order actor who thought being Senator was too much work (though being President apparently wouldn't) jumping into the fray...the only thing we're missing is a low-IQ fanatic. And Newt, one of the most disliked politicians in decades. Then the field would be complete. I'm giddy.

Only 530 Days to Go
Olbermann throws down the gauntlet.
And where are the Democratic presidential hopefuls this evening? See they not, that to which the Senate and House leadership has blinded itself?Luckily, all the serious (i.e. not Biden) candidates voted against this. It shouldn't have even required a second thought, but I guess beggars can't be choosers.
Judging these candidates based on how they voted on the original Iraq authorization, or waiting for apologies for those votes, is ancient history now.
The Democratic nomination is likely to be decided… tomorrow.
The talk of practical politics, the buying into of the President's dishonest construction "fund-the-troops-or-they-will-be-in-jeopardy," the promise of tougher action in September, is falling not on deaf ears, but rather falling on Americans who already told you what to do, and now perceive your ears as closed to practical politics.
Those who seek the Democratic nomination need to-for their own political futures and, with a thousand times more solemnity and importance, for the individual futures of our troops-denounce this betrayal, vote against it, and, if need be, unseat Majority Leader Reid and Speaker Pelosi if they continue down this path of guilty, fatal acquiescence to the tragically misguided will of a monomaniacal president.

With the exception of Senator Dodd and Senator Edwards, the Democratic presidential candidates have (so far at least) failed us.
They must now speak, and make plain how they view what has been given away to Mr. Bush, and what is yet to be given away tomorrow, and in the thousand tomorrows to come.
Because for the next fourteen months, the Democratic nominating process–indeed the whole of our political discourse until further notice–has, with the stroke of a cursed pen, become about one thing, and one thing alone.
The electorate figured this out, six months ago.
The President and the Republicans have not-doubtless will not.

Only 532 days to go...
So Giuliani's doing so well in Iowa that he's thinking about skipping it altogether. Repubs really seem to be catching onto the fact that their candidates are horribly flawed. I think last week's "I will torture better than you" fest turned off as many people as it turned on (then again, the party seems to be united in wanting to ban Ron Paul from future debates, so maybe it turned off no one), and even though guys like Newty and Fred Thompson aren't any better, the fact that they're not out revealing their horrid flaws on a daily basis is starting to be a good thing. All the parity helps Romney, I think, with his good standing in Iowa and his strong fundraising, but...if anybody other than Hillary gets the Dem nod, I'm thinking it might be a trouncing in the general election.
